Megan Lower

I am the director of Wanderlust Voyages and the primary point of contact for travelers. I view travel as a way to expand your world view, learning about different cultures and immersing yourself in the local experience. I'm not a fan of traveling halfway around the world (or even just across the nearest border) just to stay in familiar hotels, eat familiar food, and try to go about the cities/towns the way you would at home. Travel is about enjoying new destinations and experiences to their fullest, which means visiting local restaurants, unique accommodations, and, when possible, talking to local residents.

What places and activities do you specialize in?

"All of Morocco. From Tangier to the Sahara to Marrakech, and everything in between. Whether you are looking for luxury, adventure, history, or any combination thereof, we can put together the perfect itinerary for you. "

How did you get involved in travel?

"I am a lawyer-turned-travel-expert, a journey that began with my first trip to the Sahara Desert. I was so enchanted with Morocco, and the desert region in particular, that I wanted to share it with everyone. This started the conversation with my husband, Belghit (who was born in nearby Rissani), about how we could accomplish bringing friends, family, anyone and everyone to explore the wonders of Morocco. Since then, I dove headfirst into the travel business, expanding my knowledge of both the industry and Morocco. I've already been there more times than I can count, and each time I go, I visit more accommodations, try out new activities, and seek to increase my knowledge of the country."

Please share a unique travel experience you will never forget.

"Oh, so many... From transportation adventures to interactions with wild animals to weather failing to cooperate, there are always things that can make travel a unique experience. However, one of the most eye-opening and unique experiences was part of that first trip to the Sahara. I went to visit the home where Belghit grew up. It was a mud-brick house part of an ancient ksar that dates back to the 1700s. Making our way through the winding path inside, cool in the dark away from the bright sun, passing by old mule stalls, a well that once served as their primary source of water, and climbing up the winding steps to bare mud rooms, each opening into a central courtyard. The kitchen still contained a daubed mud oven for baking bread and no running water. It looked like something that you would expect to be from centuries past, not a mere two decades. And yet, that's how Belghit grew up, running down the road to his family's date farm. It was an incredible experience, very eye-opening, and one I will never forget."

Tangier- Airport pick up was prompt and easy. When we arrived at the hotel, rooms were not ready. We were taken to a local restaurant by walk after a long flight where they were not ready to accommodate 20+ guests all vegetarians. Food was not sufficient for everyone. We were super tired after long flights, not having time to unwind before trip to Asilah. Hotel was suboptimal. Floor tiles swollen with wetness, door frame chipping due to moisture.Overall rooms were bad.
Asilah was simply breathtaking. We enjoyed the time - beautiful sunsets, wonderful guide,

Gibralter- Our own trip- Fantastic- Loved it
Chefchauoen- Awesome place, great guide.Puerta AZul- Would definitely recommend for future guests. Food simple but great. Great service by Hotel managers. We felt at home. Would love to go back again to that Hotel
Guide - extremely engaging and knowledgeable. Was wonderful
Sahara camp- Need lot of improvement in planning. We were not infomed clearly about the plans in Sahara- We were taken to the desert, was asked to take only toilteries for the night only to realise that we needed clothing etc to stay that night. All suitcases had to be hauled out from vns, to put it on dirty grounds, open suitcases in front of all guests to take out additional clothes. This was done in very haphazard , hurried manner, many didnt take the essentials for the night and ATV tour. It was freezing at night, Our camp assignment was a total disaster- We were given basic room with no heating, bare bedding. Other guests got luxury room assignment.Uday family and my family were drive to another campsite for these basic rooms. We could not stay in that camp due to frigid cold weather and lack of heating and hot water. We talked to Ibrahim only to hear that nothing could be done that night. He stated that rooms were overbooked. This was totally unacceptable. We expected Megan to ensure that all room assignments were made according to our request and payments. We ended up in argument with camp manager at 11.30 pm and he called another camp to find rooms for us with heating. We were driven around midnight to another camp. With this confusion, we left behind our gloves and jackets in the camp room
We were all very tired after long trip only to face this additional difficulty at night. It was an ordeal for my family. Uday family did not get any upgrades. This should never have happened

Next morning- ATV trip- Ibrahim did not warn us about the cold weather so many failed to pack jackets, gloves, hats previous day when he suddenyly asked us to open suitcases in the middle of the road to pack for the night. ATV tour was difficult for some as they did not have proper gear for the weather. People who did not go for the tour were said that they will be taken to the hotel where our suitcases were there . Some assumed that they could take a shower and rest for sometime while waiting for atv return. We realized that hotel is only for breakfast , not for showering etc. Some guests were upset that they were not given proper information

Despite all these difficulties, camel tour was amazing.
Food at the camp for great
I didnt got for atv tour. We were thinking he could have arranged to go around the place for sightseeing instead of sitting at the breakfast area.
Fes- Was amazing. Tour guide was superb. We truly understood the history of medina. We visited the tanneries and ceramic place. We felt all items were marked up for us as we found same items at much cheaper place outside of these factories. We felt bit cheated. I dont know if guides can warn us or make some negotiations with the factory staff to be more reasonable with the prices.I truly felt that we needed more time for shopping in Fes . Medina
Mariott - Great place, good food. felt at home

Oza and gorge- Great place, but was there only for 15 min. Not enough to absorb the beauty of the place. Ibis- Not great at all .Too small rooms , no space to walk around with our suitcases. Studio city- wonderful, was exciting. worth seeing

Marakeesh-Hotel was good- food disaster- esp new year eve party food was disaster- No veg options. Many did not eat at night. Marakeesh guide- not good- Didn't spend time explaining any hist.Just walked us to the places and left us there, asking us to meet him when we are done.Same with the market- Just made us walk through the lanes so fast and never gave time to shop or gain any information about the marker. He took us to a perfume place and left us there for demo and shopping. We realized that all prices were extremely high- small amber bar costed us $8 only to get the same for 2$ outside that shop. Many guests were unhappy with this guide. We didn't have enough time to shop in the market. We felt hurried through out the trip

Casablanca was very good.Hotel was good. Rick cafe food- messed up.They served us non veg food despite our request for veg food while planning this trip. Some people ate without knowing and they felt disgusted after the food. They had very strict religious beliefs and they felt that they violated their faith. This was not acceptable.

I am writing honest feedback only for your team to take away areas that need improvement. Places were stunning, Ibrahim was awesome, vans were ok, had wifi in one van, other didn't have, so it was a problem for kids.

My important suggestion- Prepare the guests for next day by either giving a summary of next day activities with times, or print out a schedule for each family. This will help guests understand and prepare for the day- be it long bus rides, lunch at some place where veg food may not be available, dress for appropriate weather etc. We only knew what time we had to be out in the lobby for bus. Rest of the day was like " as we go".That was hard because we did n't know what we will be doing.

Would I do this trip again with your team
Absolutely

But Would like to see some improvement in communication, hotel services, food and better insider information about shopping etc

My family, who organized the trip, had requested luxury tent accommodations in Sahara dessert and we were booked with Paradis du Sahara.
However when our party of 22 arrived there , our family was told that we had to go to another tent. We waited for 20 minutes in the cold and were transferred to another, basic tent with cheap and bare minimum furnishings. Another family in our group also had the same experience. We had to be driven back for dinner to where the rest of the party were housed. We reported this to our local tour guide Ibrahim who made an alternate arrangement which was slightly better than the basic tent but still not the luxury tent we had originally booked and which others in our group got lucky enough to stay in.
This experience left a bad taste, especially since we were the first to book it and because we paid the same (high) price as the families who got the luxury tents.
Again, in Ourrzazate and Marrakech our accommodation were changed from a central location to different ones. In Ouarzazate, we were supposed to stay in a traditional Riad, and instead stayed in a standard hotel. The accommodation in Marrakesh was a good resort, but it took about 45 minutes each way to the city center, while the one I had planned for was right in the center with slightly more luxurious accommodations. Also the hotel we did stay in did not cater to our vegetarian options, despite our repeated prior communications with them, which led to many of us having to skip dinner on New Year’s Eve.
At the very least, I would have liked to have received communication about these changes. Not being informed about the downgrades made the experience all the more stressful and disappointing.

From picking us up from the airport till he dropped us off from the airport, Mr. Mohammed was always curtious and on time; gave us lots of guidance on how, where, when, who questions we had as well as having great knowledge about the geology of the routes we encountered which I was particularly interested in. His english and french were of fluent level which was also important. Because it is a trip that includes lots of road time, I would think of the option of having Land-Rover (ours was a Toyota) to be driven in for some parts of the trip that includes the hills and off road for the next time. Thank you again for creating this holiday for us. Kind regards,

Our driver Mhammed was really great, he was already on time, lots of great chats, learned a lot about Morocco through him and especially loved our time in the Sahara with him, where he is from!

Megan was very quick to respond in messages when planning the trip. Would have appreciated knowing approximately how long driving was going to be on each day to be ready for some travel days being completely in the car. Didn't feel like we needed a driver for the 4 days in Marrakech, we could have organised taxi's separately for these days. Some of the driving routes didn't quite make sense, for example driving 2 hours to get to mountains biking each way and then another 4 hours to get to Ouarzazate was a bit excessive in terms of driving and missed a couple sites because of the sunset.

The activities overall were great, (woodworking, cooking class, tour of Marrakech/Fez, mountain biking, hiking, camel riding, atv in sand dunes). The cooking class has room for improvement.

The accommodation we also very much enjoyed.

Cooking Class
Morocco

There is a lot of room for improvement with this particular cooking class. First of all, all of the knives were very dull and made it hard to cut tomatoes or any vegetable. It seemed as if the cook and the translator were both very uninterested in being there, and they were arguing amongst themselves in Arabic. There was zero explanation about spices as mentioned in the class description. Also no explanation about what we were cooking or instruction. Just sort of copy what the chef was doing and hope for the best. We got to eat our meal on the nice terrace afterwards. The setting was very nice at this very posh luxury hotel, however the beautiful setting kind of took away from the authenticity of cooking a meal. I believe there are better more authentic cooking classes in Marrakech for better value.

Beautiful Moroccan adventure. Everything was even better than expected. Hassan made our long-hours trips very enjoyable. He was very professional, super nice, kind, patient, and funny. He always had our requested water available and cold. He made us feel safe. Our check-ins were easy and smooth. The riads were the best stays, and every single one of our guides was very knowledgeable.

Our thanks go to our local specialist, Megan and her Kimkim + Wonderlust team who organized an amazing, memorable 14-day trip for us. From our first inquiry Megan, was professional, taking into consideration our age and interests. She was always prompt and patient in replying to our endless emails, concerns and enquires. Our trip was planned and booked in 2019, due to covid, it was rolled over to 2022 and a few changes had to be made, which Megan efficiently accomplished.
We can highly recommend Megan she was excellent; Thank you Megan, you gave us outstanding service.
Hmad Oussidi, was our excellent driver, he took care of us with smile, he was considerate, obliging, punctual and happily answered all of our questions. He introduced us to our local guides and the different genres of Moroccan music, plus he was good company. It was wonderful not having to navigate ourselves around the cities etc. He certainly helped to make our trip stress free. Thank you Hmad.
We found having a local guide in each city invaluable, they had different personalities, which made them even more interesting. Thier knowledgeable, insight and passion for their city, was commendable.
Our accommodation was excellent. We enjoyed interacting with the friendly staff and fellow tourists.
Each day of our trip was exciting and held its own special experience, so it's impossible to single out favourite experiences. We visited the four Imperial Cities and their medinas; they all had their own uniqueness and feel. Their history was incredible, so glad UNESCO is invested in helping to preserve various heritage sights. We so enjoyed getting a taste of the Atlas Mountains, the Berber villages and the countryside when traveling from one city to another. We had a great time in the coastal cities of Tangier and Essaouira, their history, medina and seaside atmosphere, was fabulous. The Hassan II Mosque is an architectural marvel with incredible artistry, it was awe inspiring. Chefchauouen, was visually appealing and we loved the relaxed atmosphere. We had a great holiday.
We can highly recommend Kimkim & Wanderlust Voyages.

Riad El Amine Fès
Fes

This Riad is absolutely stunning. The architecture is authentically Moroccan, the symmetry, mosaic tiles, traditional carved wooden doors, lamps etc show off the sophisticated artistry of the Moroccan craftsmen. It's richly and beautifully decorated, it felt as though we were staying in a Moroccan palace. It was a very special experience. Unfortunately, it had no welcoming reception area. If you need to speak to a staff member you had to go hunting for them. The staff were very friendly and obliging but in general there was insufficient staff especially at mealtimes. During the breakfast period, we felt very sorry for the two staff members who were trying to serve breakfast, reset tables, plus checkout guests. (The credit card machine wasn't working,) They also had to get the departing guests' suitcases to the parking area. The food was good, but we did find the dinner menu very limiting and would've preferred an al a cart menu. No internet in the bedroom. Renovation was going on all over, so it was quite noisy. The roof top terrace was also closed. Very sad, as this Hotel has great potential, just needs to be managed correctly.

We wouldn't recommend the Radisson Blu. When we arrived, we were told, they'd moved us to the Best Western, as they were full. We'd not had any prior notification thereof. (We think, they had a large group of more important guests to accommodate.) Our driver then took us to the Best Western where we spent the night, very pleasant. Radison Blu sent us, a bottle of wine, a tray of nuts and raisins and a note, apologizing for the inconvenience. (We weren't the only couple moved, luckily for us it was a one-night stopover.)

We thoroughly enjoyed this excellent hotel, the location was great, the staff are friendly, obliging and helpful. It's situated on the beach front and within easy walking distance of the medina and the harbour. The hotel is designed around a large outdoor pool, which is very pretty and well protected. We enjoyed our excellent breakfasts, outside, next to the pool. The hotel's restaurant and bar are on the beach, it was a good place to relax after a day of walking and exploring. We can recommend a visit to beautiful Essaouira and this well managed hotel.

Marrakech

This hotel really lives up to its name, "Riad Wow." As we walked into the reception, we both said, WOW! We received a very warm welcome and were offered mint tea and biscuits. I couldn't stop my eyes wondering around the reception area, as there were so many interesting decor items. There was definitely a wow factor to the deco, in all of areas of the hotel; bright, bold, colourful with interesting artefacts. It certainly looked and felt Moroccan, with a modern touch. Our room was large, richly decorated and we were welcomed with rose petals everywhere, a lovely romantic touch. The wooden window shutters and doors were exquisite. Loved the huge, golden, tassel tie backs, very majestic. The courtyard had lovely pool and the surrounding area was interesting and colourful. The roof top terrace was where Moroccan breakfasts and dinners were a served, it was also a wonderful place to put your feet up and relax. We spent 4 nights in this special Riad and would do so again, in a heartbeat. We very got very friendly with the staff, nothing was too much trouble for them, they only wanted us to be satisfied and happy. I'm gluten intolerant and at breakfast I said another, wow! as I was presented with a plate of gluten free breads, a crepe and huge slice of breakfast cake, much more than I could consume. They said, I had to have a choice. A big thank you to the chef as our couple of dinners were also delicious. Our evening waiter was very knowledgeable, interesting and we were impressed with his language skills. We certainly had an amazing, memorable experience. We can highly recommend Riad Wow.

We liked our private local guide, Morda, he was chatty, informative and knowledgeable about Tangier's history which was very interesting. We enjoyed exploring the medina with and seeing the art murals of Asilah. It was our first time in Morocco, so we asked a lot of questions which Morda happily answered. We're very glad we had the opportunity to spend time in Tangier, it's charming and definitely worth visiting, and doing a guided tour makes it more meaningful.

We found visiting Volubilis, this ancient Roman/Berber, partially excavated settlement fascinating. Our local guide was very knowledgeable, he captivated us with the history and the importance of this archaeological site. He made the ruins come alive for us, explaining just how this settlement worked, with its large merchant homes, water and heating systems etc. We loved his telling of the mythological stories explaining the beautiful mosaic floors etc. Definitely worth visiting. Next stop was the Imperial City of Meknes. Unfortunately, many of the historical sites are being extensively renovated, but our happy, friendly, interesting local guide Rashid, answered all of our questions and we did get an idea of the vastness an importance of these sites. He helped us explore the medina, the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail with its magnificent architecture and Dar Jamai, which was beautiful and interesting, gave us a good idea of a residence in 1882.

We changed our activity to a Berber Village Tour. It was great to get away from the bustle of Marrakech. Our excellent driver, Hmad fetched us, and we wound our way up into the Atlas Mountains, enjoying the beautiful scenic landscapes, and small 16th and 17th Century Berber villages along the way. We stopped at Setti Fatma where we met our young, local guide Mohammed. He led us further up the road to his small village, which was clinging to the side of the hill, all the while informing us of their way of life, their families, homes, culture and terraced farming. We explored the village, met Mohammed's uncle who invited us to have mint tea with him in his little home. We loved the interaction and it felt spontaneous. Mohammed recommended having lunch at a restaurant, alongside the Ourika River, Hmad joined us, the atmosphere was wonderful and the traditional meal delicious. Guide/Drivers: Hamid. Could not be better. Excellent safe driver, very good English, rich knowledge of places, history, customs. Always available (really, always!). Kept the car impeccably clean. Just perfect. Possibly the best driver/guide we ever had in our may years of world travels.

Guides: only three(Volubilis, Fes, and Marrakesh): all excellent.

Hotels/Riads: generally good to very good. In Rabat the service was poorly organized. The owner Aziz was mostly absent and left things in the hands of a very pleasant lady who did her best but did not know much of anything. I would not use it again. In Fes the place was great, but service was non-existent. Ouarzazate had the best combination of a nice place and excellent, attentive service. Marrakesh was also very good (location, facilities, and service). Our hotel in Casablanca was modern and clean, with standard American-like facilities. However, its location was poor and we could not even walk outside because the neighborhood had little or nothing to offer. A place by the ocean would have made our night in Casablanca more preasant.

Visits/excursions: all excellent. Well-chosen, interesting, well-organized visits. Zero negatives here!

Overall: a very satisfactory trip. The country is beautiful, all people we met were exceedingly polite and friendly and we experience no unpleasant events of any kind. We had read some highly critical reviews with alleged cheating, harassment, etc. We walked a lot on our own, day and night, asked for directions, talked to ordinary people (we speak French, which made it easier to reach a wider segment of the population), ate street food, and were always met with great kindness. Even shopping is a nice experience, bargaining is conducted with a light attitude and even if we decided not to buy something after some negotiations, we never experienced the anger or hostility we have seen in other countries.

Megan and Wanderlust were flexible, cooperative, and ready to make some changes when we asked them to do so. We are completely satisfied with the experience!

We got a private driver with a minibus for 5 persons, although it was a different guy that was mentioned in our agenda, and we called him Hassan while he was Ibrahim during the first day. We lived in several nice riads, liked the service provided there. We liked a lot our trip to Atlas Mountains, although it was not a hiking, but more climbing), and we loved the family who cooked for us a dinner afterwards, it was a delicious tagine. The best surprise for use became an absolutely new and modern desert camp hotel, fully equipped and served by French chef cook. Essaouira was a very nice old city near the ocean, we spent there 2 nights, in the future I would recommend to have only one night there, as it’s relatively small and you can see the top sights within 3 hours. The best Instagram location with blue boats in reality became a challenge for us - it’s located just in the middle of fish market, and it smells like crazy, you should be very fast and have some band on your face to make some pictures and get away from there. Fortunately, pictures do not provide a smell of it. Overall, it was a perfect trip to an ancient cities, another culture, hot weather for us (+35), and everything was arranged on a very good level. Thank you!

A wonderful thing about the trip was having a private driver to take us between destinations securely and private guides in the cities to provide facts and details of Moroccan culture. We enjoyed having this experience without being in a group tour. Our driver Aziz really looked out for us and made sure our local guides and hotel staff were able to accommodate our schedule. He was able to make the trip worry free. It was a relief to know that all of the travel would be taken care of. We highly recommend Aziz and Megan if you plan on traveling to Morocco. We look forward to booking another trip!

The moments of a lifetime were the night in the Sahara dunes, a camel ride, walking up the dunes, and dinner under the stars. My fiancé and I recently booked an incredible trip to Morocco through Kim Kim and Wanderlust and we could not have been more happy! This was our very first time to Africa and every step of the process from start to finish was seamless and comfortable. For a very risk averse person such as myself, this prevented many a sleepless night worrying about accommodations, itinerary options and transportation, all of which can become a bit of a nuisance when trying to make the most of money and time.

Once we expressed interest in our destination, we were matched with Megan, an incredible advisor who was honestly a saint. I had so, so many questions, from recommendations on tipping to Roman ruin sites and much more. She was so prompt in responding through instant messenger and after we chatted for a bit, she sent me a fully formed itinerary that we could customize. The BEST! Payment through the online portal was simple and straightforward and adjustments in planning sites to see can be made even after the initial trip is finalized. It was a very enjoyable experience.

Now, for the really brilliant part. We totally lucked out with our guide, Hassan Amraoui. I can honestly say I've never met a person like him. Both my fiancé and I wholly believe the BEST part of our trip were the hours in between destinations simply talking with him. To be able to look back on a trip to AFRICA, with all its beauty and splendor, and think, "Wow, those hours spent in the car talking with our friend were the best part," is something I could have never predicted. He is a kind, engaging, considerate and a 100% genuine human being. He cared so much for our experience and wellbeing and we felt totally safe in his care. He shared his family history, his love of languages, cultures and people and made our trip the experience it was. I cannot begin to describe the relief and joy when, after getting off the plane in a new land after a 14 hour flight, you're met by a person such as Hassan, with the big smile and heart he has. I honestly consider him my good friend. If you are lucky enough to work with Hassan, this alone will make your trip outstanding.

All in all, this was truly a trip of a lifetime. My fiancé (then girlfriend) and I were engaged in Chefchaouen on this trip and Morocco will always hold a special place in our hearts. I will absolutely be using Kim Kim/ Wanderlust in the future and I give them my fullest recommendations. This is a truly stellar company. Hassan is a truly stellar human being. Much love to them all.

The travel time while lengthy was worth the destination. We hit all the hot spots and for the perfect length considering our total length of trip. Before the trip I made some enquiries and suggestions, but Megan assured me of the length of time and she couldn't have been more on point!

Hamid our driver was an absolute pleasure, he took such good care of us and always with a smile. He was accommodating, knowledgeable, friendly and funny. The trip wouldn't have been the same without him and we are so grateful for his guidance throughout. He made us feel safe on the road and in each location. He had great suggestions for lookout and photo locations. He recommended great restaurants and helped when one of the party was unwell, taking us to the clinic and translating with the Doctor. He went above and beyond, was contactable and happy to help at any hour, no request too small (honey lemon and ginger tea) or to great!

Our guide in Fes, Kamal, was absolutely fantastic - we could not have been more pleased. His knowledge was so extensive in regards to Fes but also Islam as a religion and the Moroccan culture in general.

The hotels we stayed in were all fantastic, with the exception of the hotel in Casablanca which was very business-y. Also the last hotel we stayed in in Marrakech 'had a pool' but it was not usable in my opinion. It was more of a deep fountain/pond with no sunbeds, in the middle of the hotel lobby

Honestly, I cannot imagine exploring Morocco without WanderLust Voyages which we found through KimKim. Our own private guide with a comfy van outfitted with wifi picked us up in Fez and took us everywhere on our itinerary over the next 10 days. Without a personal guide and driver, there is no way we would have seen as much. Leading up to the trip, we had to change our dates and plans over and over again due to COVID and work and Megan just rolled with it. We even ended up having an extra two days and Megan was able to extend our trip easily without changing the budget. We stayed in gorgeous Riads, which are boutique hotels with spas and authentic Moroccan decor. Each one was special and perfectly located inside the old Medina areas with excellent service, luxurious rooms, wifi, and truly phenomenal meals. I would never have known which one to pick without Megan making the selections. On our own, we probably would have used frequent flyer miles in generic hotels in tourist areas. The activities to which we were directed weren't the tourist traps many of the tours take you to. They were genuinely memorable lifetime experiences. In several cities, Megan arranged for highly knowledgeable guides to explain the history and interesting stories about the places we visited. We could ask all our questions and veer off the scheduled route when something curious arose. The whole trip was like a treasure box with each day full of unique delightful surprises.

We didn't have time to go to Marrakech because we chose Fez, the desert, and Tangier--- I would not recommend missing either the desert or Tangier. We took an hour-long ride on a dromedary ("one hump camel") in the dunes at sunset which was silent and sacred. After the meal in our tent, the local teenagers taught us how to play Berber drums. In Tangier, we looked across the Straights of Gibralter to Spain. If you are a foodie and fan of irreverent Beatnick history, definitely watch the Anthony Bourdain special on Tangier before you go. Learning the thousands of years of history of this international zone really rocked my worldview-- crazy to compare a place that holds onto 200,000 years of history in its current context with Los Angeles which has managed to erase anything before the last 200. Actually, if you are coming from Spain, I highly recommend the ferry across the Straights as your starting point. We spent one night near Meknes in a winery/spa/boutique hotel that was phenomenal! I only wish we had booked two nights. We were thinking it was just a stopover during a long drive, but it was worth a longer stay to truly enjoy the classical herb garden, 750 hectares of vineyards, winery, spa, pools, and food--- very decadent.

Nevertheless-- everyone said, "What! You're not going to Marrakech!?" next time...

Our local guide and driver was Ibrahim-- request him!! Kamal was our expert in Fez-- request him too!

Megan is great. She planned and replanned the trip keeping everything within budget so there was no stress or surprises, and check up on us through Ibrahim all along the way.

If you want something special or different-- Megan can guide you. Stay as long as you can.

Loved it!

Riad El Amine Fès
Fes

This place is a total shock to the uninitiated. It is located in the old Medina and, if you arrive as we did, your van pulls into this overcrowded dirt parking lot next to a public park, packs of stray dogs, and a cluster of what seem like dingy ancient 4 story plaster buildings with no windows and with graffiti proclaiming "Never Fall in Love" scrawled on a wall. Some people were playing cards and smoking in a pharmacy of one building. Our guide took us walking with our bags among winding passageways to a fancy door that we decided must be the door to the TARDIS because the inside was definitely bigger than the outside! It opened into the gorgeous courtyard and elegant rooms with intricate mosaics covering the walls. Inside, everything was immaculate and luxurious. The staff was always present and helpful. The meals were delicious-- and always more food than we could possibly eat. The swimming pool was beautiful but freezing. One night a band came in to entertain everyone with traditional music. Our room was great-- one thing, though, if you are used to a king-sized bed with your spouse that is made up for two people to be under one cover, you will be surprised. A king-sized bed here is two twins pushed together-- easily remedied, though. The Riad served as a great jumping off point to explore Fez!

Tips for future travelers

Somewhat difficult to walk to things from the hotel. Plan to drive or order a ride.

Kamal was a great guide! Not even bread crumbs would save you in the 9,400 streets of the old Medina and having someone along who knows the history and stories makes it so meaningful. He also steered us to a delicious and beautiful spot for lunch-- we would never have known it was there without him. The local craft places were a little bit touristy-- and priced for tourists-- but, hey, we were tourists! The textiles, ceramics, silver, rugs, and leather were fun to see because they were being made the old way right in front of you. We could peek into but not enter the mosques, but what we could see was beautiful. I am so glad that UNESCO is investing in saving this piece of history.

We had a very positive experience booking our trip with KimKim (thanks, Megan), and our trip was great too. We had originally booked our trip for March 2020… and ended up cancelling shortly before we were due to leave because of Covid. Fast forward two years, we emailed KimKim/Megan and she still had all our details and was able to rebook our original planned trip for the same price.

Everything about our trip turned out just as planned and worked out really well. Our driver, Aziz, was great - driving us all over Morocco in his Mercedes van (with WiFi!), doing so safely while also sharing his knowledge about our surroundings. We even had the pleasure of having tea with his family in Erg Chebbi, which was very nice.

Our tour included extensive time with dedicated guides in both Fez and Marrakech - and they were great, showing us around the key sites and the inner mazes of the medinas, providing in depth knowledge of the history and architecture of these places.

The riads where we stayed we’re all nice - centrally located and architectural marvels , especially the ones in Rabat and Fez. The desert camp was a great experience, from the camel ride out across the dunes to having a campfire and Berber songs under the stars.

The above is just about the service provided/arranged by KimKim, Megan, and their local agent, Wanderlust Travel. But Morocco itself was stunning. We’ve traveled extensively, and I’d say Morocco is tops, both for it’s amazing landscapes as well as the incredible experience of going through the medinas.

The only reason I gave 4 stars is that I wish the local guides that they outsourced to take us on Medina trips would bring us to fewer demo/shopping experiences. I have been to many big and inexpensive tours in developing countries, where tour guides heavily rely on kickbacks from these shops, which in turn typically charge multiple times more for those run-of-the-mill souvenirs. I understand that this is the eco-system and as long as I knew, I would never bite. I chose "luxury" (and paid that way) when we booked this trip and was hoping for a much more intimate, exclusive and trustworthy experience. We would have appreciated if they asked us "would you like to shop during your visit?" or warned us "if you do shop, it's very common to bargain in this culture", and said something when we started paying some ridiculous prices. When the airline overbooked our flight and we stayed one more day in Casablanca to explored on our own, we found out we paid 5 times more for the Djellaba that we bought in Fes. We also paid about $120 for some spices and soaps, because the "demo" place said they were a "government shop". These tourist traps were not consistent with the "luxury personalized trip" that I signed up for.

Agafay camp is WONDERFUL! The amenities better than many of the glamp sites we have been to in the US. They also include dinner and breakfast, which are top notched! I couldn't believe we were able to enjoy such great hospitality in the middle of the desert! Camel ride was super fun. The desert is rocky, so pictures are not as nice, but I understand this is not the Sahara.

Seriously, request Said if you can.  You wont regret it!

Over 13 days, we visited Casablanca, Rabat, Chefchaouen, Volubilis, Fes, Meknes, Merzouga, the Erg Chebbi Dunes, Boumalne Dades, Ouarzazate, Ait Benhaddou, and Marrakech.  Trip highlights included hiking in the High Atlas Mountains, staying in a tented camp in the Sahara desert, being guided to incredible handcrafted goods in the medinas of Fes and Marrakech, and having tea with Said's family in Erfoud.  We were able to see and learn so much but never felt rushed or pressed for time.

While planning the trip, we worked with Megan who used our preferences re must-see sites, trip pacing and budget to create our ideal vacation.  We were especially happy with (1) Megan's hotel picks for us and (2) the fact that she was able to put together our vacation in such a short period of time (I think we first contacted her 3 weeks before our departure date).  We also had wonderful experiences with the site-specific guides we met for day tours in Fes, Meknes, Merzouga, the Toudgha Gorge, the Ourika Valley, and Marrakech.

Many thanks to the Wanderlust team (and especially Said) for enabling us to have such a wonderful experience!

Megan put together a jam-packed 4-day itinerary for me as I wanted to fit in as much as possible in the short time I had available. Every day, multiple times a day, I was grateful for his company, his generosity, his knowledge and advice, and his driving. There is no way that I would have seen and experienced all that I did without Ismail at the wheel and by my side. I can’t express my gratitude enough, thank you to Megan for booking Ismail, and thank you to my new friend Ismail for a truly amazing holiday.

As for Morocco itself, I am in love! A trip to Morocco has been on my wish list forever and four days has only left me craving more. Akchour falls and the drive through the mountains to Chefchaouen was a spectacular start to my first day. Ismail and I shared Moroccan tea by the falls and lunch in Chefchaouen, and later in the afternoon he accompanied me to the Spanish mosque to watch the sunset - as a solo female traveller Ismail’s company was very much appreciated. I spent a very comfortable night at the homely and welcoming Dar Laman, with a delicious breakfast in the morning.

The following day we travelled to Volubilis, where I spent an hour with a fantastic locally born guide touring the Roman ruins, however I could have easily spent the whole day exploring here. Ismail navigated the traffic and many police cameras onwards to Meknes, where I visited Bab el-Mansour gate and explored the Médina, finishing with lunch on the roof terrace at Restaurant Salma overlooking Prison de Kara. We finished the day with a short drive to Fes to check into the surprisingly luxurious Dar Tresor, my riad for two nights.

Fes...oh what a surprise, no one warned me that Fes would steal my heart! I cry every time I think of my life changing day in Fes with the inspiring city guide Kammal, and Ismail driving us between sights. Fes is an ancient melting pot of spiritual and cultural traditions that I can’t begin to describe, I just know that I will be going back, hopefully one day soon. Kammal also arranged for me to visit the restored Royal Médina Spa for a Hammam and massage, where the service and ambience was impeccable, including a guide to collect and return me to my riad.

On the final day we traveled first to Rabat to see the Hassan Tower and Royal Mausoleum, before heading north again to Tangier. I slept while Ismail drove, and he made a special detour for me to visit the Caves of Hercules and Cap Spartel, before carrying my bag up the hill to my final riad.

Thank you to everyone, especially Ismail - a true gentleman, who helped to make this trip the best experience of my life, I am already planning my next trip to Morroco to visit the south and the deserts.

She worked with me to build a trip plan for us that fit our needs perfectly, and our tour guide Omar made sure the plan was executed flawlessly. Omar was a consummate professional from our first meeting at the airport. He shared with us his knowledge of the history and culture of Morocco and was resourceful when the unexpected happened, which we learned is often the case here. A few highlights of our trip were hiking in the Ourika Valley followed by lunch with a local Berber family; a cooking class in Marrakech, where we prepared (and ate!) our own tagine and Moroccan salads; getting a scrub and massage at a traditional hammam; touring a winery outside of Essaouira and tasting fine Moroccan wines; touring the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca; and strolling the medinas in each city we visited. With Omar as our guide, all of our needs for Moroccan coffee, mint tea, and stopping for impromptu photo ops with goats in trees were happily accommodated. He even taught me some basic Darija so I could communicate with my daughter's host family in Rabat.

Omar my driver was also sensational! He had remarkable driving skills for the chaos of the city streets, the winding curves of the mountains, and the blind turns of the medinas. He was not only able to safely get me to where I needed to go but was able to entertain and delight along the way. He was even considerate enough to invite me to meet his mother in Ouarzazate, and he purchased a birthday cake for my birthday in the Sahara! My trip was truly made extra memorable by his presence.

To our driver/guide, Omar, my friends and I couldn't be more grateful for his professionalism and compassion for his craft. He welcomed us with a big smile on his face. He's always on time. Made sure we are all safe and comfortable. He treated us as his family (where he welcomed us to his humble abode in Rose Valley - much respect for this Berber family, such a beautiful one! ). He was very patient with our last minute requests. Even if he already dropped us off at our riad, he kept sending messages throughout the night just to make sure we are doing great. Our stay wouldn't be this awesome if not with him. With that, Omar, we are extremely grateful!
We would also want to commend, Emily from the private riad at the desert for being the nicest and caring and hospitable. She welcomed us with open arms, cooked good food for us, chitchatted with us during our stay. We love that she's so cool and sweet that we feel like we could have stayed longer and enjoyed her company and that of the serenity of the desert.
All riads and hotel we stayed at were all superb. There were a few mishaps but doesn't outweigh its beauty and the staff's professionalism. The riads will absolutely make you feel like you are in a different place and era.
Overall, the experience was one for the books. Something me and my friends will definitely treasure for the rest of our lives. Thanks to Kimkim and Wanderlust Voyages! Kudos to all! Keep it up!

We visited Morocco in October for 1 week and had an amazing time! Megan was professional, responsive and always willing to help us with last minute adjustments to the trip. Our tour guide while on the trip, Omar, was wonderful and always went above and beyond to make sure the trip was special and memorable for us - he has a great playlist which made even the long-drives enjoyable,
and he was always a willing photographer to help capture every moment. The highlight of the trip was definitely the day we spent glamping in the desert driving ATVs and riding camels during the sunset.

We were met by Mohammed which was a surprise to us. When we checked into the hotel in Casablanca, we were told we would have to pay taxes, and breakfast was not included. Our itinerary said taxes and breakfast were included. We also missed the Jewish Museum as promised by the itinerary. We had to wait to be able to enter the Mosque when we probably would have enjoyed the Jewish Museum more. So we didn't get off to a great start on day 1. When we spoke with the guide and our driver Mohammed, the issues were resolved, but we shouldn't have had the problems in the first place. Where meals were provided, and we mentioned we needed vegetarian for at least 2 of us, they were not aware of our requests in advance (ie. Auberge Chez Pierre). These places should have been aware our dietary needs in advance. All the riads were great. We loved the Chez Pierre the best. The food was amazing! Mohammed turned out to be a fabulous driver and very attentive to our needs. I got very sick and he was truly concerned and helpful.

My driver got me to my guide, Rachid, and we went to walk around the medina and markets. He was very knowledgeable and helped me to purchase some spices. Then I was taken to a family just outside of the city. They were lovely and took me to the local market with them to buy ingredients for lunch. We even had to go around the flock of sheep that just ran into the square.
They showed me how to make the traditional foods such as mint tea, Moroccan salads and of course, tagine. Then we ate. A very welcoming and enjoyable experience.

I stayed overnight in the old city at a place called Riad D'Or. Inside the maze of the town but not too far to get lost. The riad itself was 3 homes combined and was itself a maze to get around. Charming and very authentic.

Lastly was a trip on the return to Volubilis, the ruins of an ancient Roman city. Very interesting and some beautiful mosaics still remain.

All in all a really nice side trip.

He made us feel comfortable and became a good friend by the end of the trip. Throughout the trip, Megan was checking in on us making sure things were smooth. We had a great experience thereafter in Morocco! We loved our tour guide Mohammed who took us around Marrakesh and then our tour guide in Imlil where we did a hike to Ourika waterfalls and then had lunch with a local Berber family. These were great memories! For such a short time on Morocco, we were able to see everything we wanted. Thank you so much Megan for making our personalized trip a memorable one!
