Stephen Taranto
I am an ecologist and I ended up in La Paz in 2003 after marrying a fellow ecologist from Bolivia who I met at university. I chose to start La Paz on Foot because I believe that experiential adventure travel can be a positive tool for improving people's lives and protecting natural and cultural resources. That is why I practice responsible tourism in all the amazing places we'll visit together!
What places and activities do you specialize in?
"I specialize in the city and valley of La Paz, Bolivia however now provide travel programs in support throughout the country, including Lake Titicaca and the Island of the Sun, the Uyuni Salt Flats, Madidi National Park, Sucre & Potosi and beyond to Lima, Arequipa, Cusco, Machu Picchu in the north and Salta, San Pedro de Atacama and the Chilean coast to the south. I am passionate about organizing experiences that put travelers into close, respectful contact with local communities and landscapes and facilitating immersion in national parks and other protected areas."
How did you get involved in travel?
"The Andes are an ecologist's "dream come true", with the range's many ecosystems and cultural groups. When I moved to Bolivia in 2003, I decided that I wanted to dedicate myself to educating others about the wonders of this fascinating part of the world. I started out with an "Urban Trek" of La Paz and since then have expanded to work through Bolivia and in southern Perú, northern Chile and northwest Argentina. "
Please share a unique travel experience you will never forget.
"In 2010, I traveled with a group of Bolivian high school seniors to the coast of Perú, near the town of Ilo. The students had never seen the ocean before and, as Bolivia does not have it's own coastline, held special significance for them. The experience of traveling with them from La Paz, through migration, on to the coast and then joining them as they took their first swim was unforgettable."

Trip planning was good. Communication was great. I had asked for a trip outside the normal tourist trip and the team complied well with my request. The overall price was way too high for what I received. The accommodations were as basic as I've ever seen in Latin America. I can't understand where $2700 USD went when planning this trip. My goal was to find hard evidence of climate change in the region. There wasn't any hard evidence. I know climate change is hard to capture in a photograph,... read more
